Do I need a permit to remodel a bathroom in LA?

It depends on what you're changing. The City of Los Angeles allows a combined e-permit that covers repair or replacement of cabinets, flooring, wall finishes, tile, counters, and plumbing or electrical fixtures, as long as those fixtures stay in their existing locations. No wall or opening changes are allowed under that e-permit, and no new plumbing or electrical penetration into an existing wall is allowed either.

If your remodel moves a wall, relocates a fixture into a new spot, or opens a wall for new plumbing or electrical, you need an in-person plan check at an LADBS Construction Services Center with two sets of floor plans before work starts. Most homes have a wet wall, the thicker interior wall carrying the main water lines. Keeping fixtures on or near it, per LADBS plumbing permit guidance, is usually what keeps a remodel inside the simpler e-permit rather than triggering a full plan check.
